Trading Post: Lag Warning

Posted on: | No Comments

Since this happened to a few people last night and it is a KNOWN issue, I figured a quick warning post was in order.

If you click “buy” on something in the trading post, and the button becomes greyed out, you HAVE actually bought that item – even if the TP hasn’t yet taken your money and the item isn’t yet listed in your “bought items” panel OR in the “stuff to collect” panel. If you click buy again, it will purchase it a SECOND time, and again for every time you click buy. At some point later, the TP WILL catch up with the transactions and take the money from you (generating that “WTF…where did my money just vanish to?” moment 🙁 )…and then later again the bought items will eventually appear for collection (or a refund will appear if you were fortunate enough that the price changed between clicking buy and when the server processed the order – I’ve had that happen once too, though I’ve also had the item AND a partial refund arrive because the price dropped instead).

It can take 24+ hours for items affected by a TP lag spike to appear (or a server restart) – and NEW purchases CAN be delivered first before old ones that were caught up in slow processing finally get delivered.

I know it’s slow and laggy at present – I’m expecting that ArenaNet will get that sorted out over the next few weeks. Just be aware not to re-click/re-try purchases/sales on the TP when it lags, or you’ll end up with extras/no money left when the TP catches up.

Game Status Updates – Sep 6th

Posted on: | No Comments

Today’s game status updates from ArenaNet. Note that they are predicting a 1 hour outage of the servers while they apply “significant updates” from 5pm-6pm tonight.

02:39, 6 September 2012 (UTC)

Account Security
Hackers have lists of email addresses and passwords stolen from other games and web sites, and collected through spyware, and are systematically testing Guild Wars 2 looking for matching accounts. To protect yourself, use a strong, unique password for Guild Wars 2 that you’ve never used anywhere else!
Customer Support
Our customer support team is prioritizing hacked accounts and other blocking login issues over other types of support requests.
Hacked accounts – If you submit a support ticket for a hacked account, ensure it is properly prioritized by following these instructions. We’re resolving prioritized hacked account tickets within 72 hours. If you have an older hacked account ticket that has not been resolved, it may not be properly prioritized, or the ticket may not contain enough information for us to address it quickly. Please update your existing ticket, clearly state that this is a hacked account ticket, and provide as much information as possible, including your account email address, your account display name or character names, and your 25-digit Guild Wars 2 serial code.
Email authentication – We will soon provide a secure method on our web site for customers who are having trouble with email authentication to disable it for their accounts. We ask that you use this new self-help system, and only submit a support ticket if that doesn’t work for you.
Password resets – We will soon provide a secure method on our web site for customers who have lost their passwords or whose passwords aren’t working to reset their passwords. We ask that you use this new self-help system, and only submit a support ticket if that doesn’t work for you.
Support forums – The official support forums are now online, and we have a new forum for players helping other players.
Trading Post
The Trading Post is now available to all players. Items and gold deliveries that have been delayed should arrive soon. Please check your “pick up” tab.
Parties & Guilds
We’re working on capacity constraints causing issues with parties and guild functionality, including symptoms such as party members not appearing on the map, parties not staying together as they travel between maps or into dungeons, and guild manipulation not working. We deployed fixes in last night’s update and will deploy additional fixes in tonight’s update.
Note that guild upgrades and guild influence are world-specific. If you move your account to a new world, you’ll see the upgrades and influence that your guild has on that new world, not the upgrades and influence you previously saw on the old world.
PvP Tournament rewards
We’re still working on the issue with missing PvP tournament rewards.
World v. World event rewards
Event rewards for Dolyak caravan escort events in World v. World will be disabled until further notice.
Storyline steps
In tonight’s software update we will fix issues with the storyline steps “Fury of the Dead”, “Grisly Shipment”, and “In The Ruins”.
Downed mode camera
In tonight’s software update we will improve the downed mode camera to maintain a more consistent distance taking race into account.
Reporting exploits
If you discover an emergency game-breaking or economy-breaking bug, do not exploit it, but please notify us immediately at this email address: exploits (at) arena (dot) net. You may also use this email address to report suspected security vulnerabilities. Thank you to everyone who has sent reports. However, note that we cannot respond individually to emails to this address.
Worlds & Overflow
We’re increasing world capacity as necessary to handle all the new players coming into the game.
During this initial surge of high concurrency, and especially while most characters are low-level and thus playing in the same starting areas, it’s common for players to be directed to overflow servers. To play with a friend on a different overflow server, form a party together, then right-click on the friend’s portrait in the party list and click “join”. We expect the use of overflow servers to naturally subside as players spread out more through the world.
Next software updates
We’ll perform a significant update tonight at midnight Seattle time, during which the game will be unavailable for approximately one hour.
We’ll perform maintenance on the Guild Wars 2 wiki tonight, during which time the wiki will be unavailable for approximately one hour.

Mumble Overlay Fix!

Posted on: | 3 Comments

Hi All,

I had some trouble with the Mumble Overlay working in Guild Wars 2. Here’s how I fixed it:

Add the game to the “Whitelist” for overlay:

  1. Open Mumble, Go to the Configure Menu, Click “Settings”.
  2. If it isn’t already ticked, tick “Advanced” at the bottom right.
  3. Select “Overlay” on the left, and click the “Overlay Exceptions” tab. Select “Whitelist”.
  4. Click “Add” and browse to your GW2 install directory. Select GW2.exe.

Modify the shortcut you use to open Guild Wars 2 to skip the patch/login screen:

  1. Right click the shortcut.
  2. Add the following to the end of the “Target” field: -password YOURPASS -email YOURGW2EMAIL -nopatchui
  3. The shorcut “Target” field should now look like this: “D:\Games\Guild Wars 2\Gw2.exe” -password MyPa$$worD -email bak@thelols.com -nopatchui
  4. Load GW2 and it should now display the Mumble overlay.

How it works:

The reason that Mumble Overlay can break is because the game loads the launcher screen. We stop this with the “-nopatchui”. This alone is sufficient to get the overlay to display – but since we don’t see the launcher screen we can’t actually log in.

Since that’s a bit of a problem, we have to add the username and password to the shortcut so we can log in.
The Risks:
You’re adding your username and password to the local shortcut on your machine. This means:
  • Anybody who double clicks the shortcut on your computer will automatically log in as you.
  • Anybody who has access to your computer could look at the properties of the shortcut to see your username and password.
  • You are NOT at any additional risk of your account being hacked, unless somebody logs into your computer and looks at the shortcut.
See you in game!

Customer Support
Our customer support team is prioritizing hacked accounts and other blocking login issues over other types of support requests. If you submit a support ticket for a hacked account, ensure it is properly prioritized by following these instructions.
We have now completed prioritized requests submitted prior to Sunday, September 2. If you have an older ticket for a hacked account or blocking login issue that has not been completed, that means it’s not correctly prioritized. Submit a new ticket using the above instructions, and in the title write, “Blocking Login – Ticket submitted <date> – Ticket number xxxxxx-xxxxxx” (fill in the date and ticket number of your existing ticket), and we will prioritize your existing ticket.
Email Authentication
Once you validate your account email address, we help protect you from attempted account hacking (even if the hacker guesses your password) by sending you an email every time you attempt to login from a new location, asking you to approve or deny the login attempt. Keep in mind, if you receive an email asking you to approve or deny a login attempt and you didn’t make that login attempt, that means a hacker knows your password. Change your password immediately.
Be sure not to flag an email authentication message as spam; if you do, your email provider may prevent future email authentication messages from reaching you.
If email authentication is preventing you from logging in, contact our customer support team following these instructions and we’ll disable it for your account.
Trading Post
We’ve addressed capacity constraints, and the Trading Post is now available for all users!
Gem Purchases
Some customers who purchased gems experienced a delay in delivery of those gems to their account. This issue has now been fixed and all gems have been delivered.
Parties & Guilds
We’re working on capacity constraints causing issues with parties and guild functionality, including symptoms such as party members not appearing on the map, parties not staying together as they travel between maps or into dungeons, and guild manipulation not working. We will deploy a software update tonight and another tomorrow night that will improve these issues.
PvP Tournament rewards
We’re still working on the issue with missing PvP tournament rewards.
World v. World event rewards
We’re temporarily disabling rewards on Dolyak caravan escort events in World v. World while we work on rebalancing them.
Storyline steps
In last night’s software update we fixed issues with the storyline steps “The Battle for Fort Trinity” and “Shell Shock”.
Item descriptions
In tonight’s software update we’ll fix issues with item tooltips and chat links. Tooltips will now properly show names of item upgrades. Chat links will now properly show names of transmuted items, weapon/armor suffixes in names, and quantities of stackable items.
Forums
This afternoon we brought the official support forums online for testing. We’ll roll out additional forums in the coming days.
Reporting exploits
If you discover an emergency game-breaking or economy-breaking bug, do not exploit it, but please notify us immediately at this email address: exploits (at) arena (dot) net.
Today a Guild Wars related fan site announced that its account database has been breached. That’s important but just one of many apparent breaches of other games and web sites that hackers have been collecting email addresses and passwords from. Protect yourself by using a unique password for each game and web site account you care about, and especially be sure to use a unique password for your Guild Wars 2 account.
Customer Support
Our customer support team is prioritizing hacked accounts and other blocking login issues over other types of support requests. If you submit a support ticket for a hacked account, ensure it is properly prioritized by following these instructions.
We have now completed prioritized requests submitted prior to Saturday, September 1. If you have an older ticket that has not been completed, that means it’s not correctly prioritized. Submit a new ticket using the above instructions, and in the title write, “Hacked Account – Ticket submitted August xx – Ticket number xxxxxx-xxxxxx” (fill in the date and ticket number of your existing ticket), and we will prioritize your existing ticket.
In the past 24 hours we helped 2,574 players with hacked accounts and 2,867 players with other blocking login issues get back into the game.
Reset Password
We will leave “reset password” disabled until further notice. We don’t want to allow hackers who compromise an email account to use that email account to steal the associated Guild Wars 2 game account. If you forget your password, please contact customer support.
Network Connectivity Issues
We experienced network connectivity issues today between our North American and European data centers, which caused intermittent errors with login, character creation and deletion, and guild manipulation. These issues should now be resolved.
Parties & Guilds
We’ve made progress but still have capacity constraints causing issues with party and guild functionality, including symptoms such as party members not appearing on the map, parties not staying together as they travel between maps or into dungeons, and guild manipulation not working. We’re working on a fix and will provide a further update tomorrow.
PvP Tournament Rewards
PvP tournament rewards are currently not functioning properly. We’re working on a fix and will provide a further update tomorrow.
Trading Post
We’ve been expanding the Trading Post’s capacity to handle the huge volume of requested trades. After our test yesterday, we’ve been working to resolve some issues reported by players. We expect to have the Trading Post online for all players this evening.
Storyline Steps
In last night’s update we fixed blocking issues with the storyline steps “Stealing Secrets” and “A Grisly Shipment”. We’re preparing to fix issues with “The Battle for Fort Trinity” and “Shell Shock” for tonight’s update.
Forums
Our most important priority at the moment is to ensure that the game runs stably and flawlessly. So as to not create additional demand on our infrastructure and on our programming team, we made the decision not to open the forums until the initial mass influx of players has calmed down a bit.
Next software updates
We’re making non-disruptive changes throughout the day. We’ll publish the next back-end server update tonight at midnight Seattle time. The game may be unavailable for approximately 20-60 minutes while we perform this update.

Account Security

Large increase in hacked accounts

There has been a big upswing in hacked accounts in GW2 at present, which has been somewhat concerning. Part of this I believe is a result of the break-in to the BattleNet authentication servers recently (Diablo 3), which gave the hacker(s) a list of email accounts associated with RPG/Online Games as a start point. Part of it is ALSO due to the password reset option (now currently disabled) on the GW2/NCSoft websites, because it would give a different message when used with a real game account email to that when used with a non-existent game account address – they could use the password reset to verify if there was a GW account attached to that email address…and then just try to brute force the password for that confirmed account name/address.

From Mike O’Brien (ArenaNet Founder) on Reddit:

Account security – We’re seeing an uptick in reports of account theft and attempted account theft. We believe hackers are using databases of email addresses and passwords stolen from other games and web sites, and pre-existing trojan horses, to search for matching Guild Wars 2 accounts which they attempt to compromise. To prevent this, we have temporarily disabled the “reset password” feature, and we’re working to bring email authentication online. To protect yourself, please ensure that you use a unique password for Guild Wars 2 that you don’t use for any other game, email account, forum or web account.

Email authentication – Email authentication is a feature that notifies you if someone tries to log into your account from a location you’ve never logged in from before. Thus, even if someone guesses your game password, he can’t log in unless he also guesses your email account password. You can make email authentication even more secure by using an email provider that supports two-factor authentication, such as Google or Yahoo, and taking advantage of that. We’re currently preparing email authentication and intend to deploy it in a phased rollout, starting on Thursday, August 30.

If you’ve been getting password reset attempt emails, it means that your account login name IS KNOWN to the gold sellers/hackers trying to break in. You may want to seriously consider changing the login email through the accounts page at the official site from a known safe machine…

If you have LOST access to account login, it’s possible that the account password has been guessed, and the person who got in has ALREADY changed your account email address. If you had your GW1 account linked to an NCSoft Master Account, you can log into the Master Account to see what the new email address was set to, change the password from the Master Account to lock the hacker back out again, and then log into the GW2 account page again to fix the email address back to one you own. Also – submit a support request asap as you’re likely to need a roll-back on the account and/or have been reported in-game for the hacker’s behaviour on your account – many people are currently getting 72hr/permanent bans on hacked accounts at present :(. Be aware that support is backed up very badly at present, it’s entirely likely that you won’t get a response for 4-5 days.

ArenaNet have added a brief “advice” page for security here: https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/tips-for-keeping-your-guild-wars-2-account-secure/

Unique Account Emails

Many mail services like gmail allow you to use suffixes on your email address to create “unique” versions of your email address for different purposes without having to have multiple email boxes and login details. If you had been getting password reset emails and would like to change the email address used as your GW account login address, you may be able to do so using a suffix on your existing email so that you don’t have to create a new email account somewhere.

For example, if your email address was “bob@example.com”, you may be able to use a suffix like “bob+mysecureloginname@example.com”. The name portion has a separator character (usually either “+”, “-” or “=”) followed by whatever random string you want to use for the email address. Test sending to yourself with different versions to see if this is available to you. Gmail and hotmail both support this using “+” as the separator.

Email Authentication

ArenaNet are rolling out an email authentication system that sounds pretty much like SteamGuard over the next couple of days. Once that’s available, turning it on will mean that any login attempt from an unknown location will result in you receiving an email asking you to approve/deny that location for being able to log in.

Edit: Information on activating this can be found here: http://en.support.guildwars2.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/9192/

GW2: Maintenance hour this evening

From facebook:

At midnight PDT (3 hours from now) we will be bringing the servers down for maintenance. The estimated downtime will be between 20 – 60 min. Thank you for your patience. ~RB

The server will be shutting down at 5pm Melbourne time this evening, and is expected to be offline for 20-60 minutes.

No information on what is actually being done during this time, but I figured people would appreciate the warning.

EDIT: The game came back up at 5:30pm, so it was down for about 30 minutes 🙂

Current List of Known Issues

This is direct from a support email received today (unfortunately, not actually related to the support query itself at all though).

Login Issues:

Forum Issues

The forums are currently down. Attempting to log into the forums will cause an error to display advising that you do not have a Guild Wars 2 account. This error will continue to be displayed until the forums are repaired. We are working to get the forums back online as soon as possible. In the meantime please disregard this error message.

Error Messages

There are a variety of errors that can be displayed when you fail to log into the client. Please review the error below if you are receiving an error upon login. A full list of all error codes and what they mean can be found at http://en.support.guildwars2.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/8994.

The Most common error is Error 9 which indicates you do not have Headstart access and must wait until 00:00 PDT (12 am PDT), on August 28th to login. If you believe
this is an error and your code should have headstart, then please contact your retailer about your code and let them know your code does not include headstart access.

Client/Account Issues

If you’ve linked a Guild Wars account to your Guild Wars 2 account, it’s important to understand that Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2 now use the same login information. Your Guild Wars 2 account will be your Guild Wars login details. Basically, both accounts now have the same login and password. This is intended.

Please check to ensure you are logging in with the registered login e-mail and that your password meets password requirements of being between 8-13 characters exactly and contains only numbers and letters.

If you’re having trouble verifying your email address, you can play without verifying your email address by clicking “Play” on the Guild Wars 2 Launcher if you already downloaded the client. We’re working to fix email verification, and you can verify your address once we do.

Accounts created with a Pre-purchase code will have access to the 3-day Headstart event as well as receive the Hero’s Band item in game.

Accounts created with a Pre-order code will only have access to a 1-day Headstart event.

Where you purchased your edition of the game, and how much was paid should determine whether you bought a Pre-purchase or Pre-order code:

  • All players who pre-purchased their edition of Guild Wars 2 from our website (https://buy.guildwars2.com) and have registered their account will have access to the 3-day Headstart event.
  • Players who bought their edition of the game from a vendor listed on the Retailer webpage (https://buy.guildwars2.com/en/retailers) and paid full price for the game should have received a Pre-purchase code to register their account.
  • Players who bought their edition of the game from a vendor listed on the Retailers webpage (https://buy.guildwars2.com/en/retailers) and paid partial price for the game should have received a Pre-order code to register their account.
  • Players who purchased from a vendor not listed on the on the Retailers webpage (https://buy.guildwars2.com/en/retailers) will most likely not have access to either of the Headstart events.

Please note that some vendors were incorrectly selling Pre-order codes for full price. If you were able to register a code prior to the Headstart events, but are not able to log in during the 3-day Headstart period, you most likely received a Pre-order code from your vendor. As only the vendor these items were purchased from can provide you with a code, you will need to contact their support teams for assistance.

Linking Guild Wars Accounts:

If you’d like to link an original Guild Wars account to a Guild Wars 2 account, this feature is now available! Please visit the following Knowledge Base article which will describe and cover all the steps needed to complete this: http://en.support.guildwars2.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/9028

Please note: Once you link a Guild Wars account to Guild Wars 2, you cannot unlink them. Choose wisely and type carefully!

If you are wondering if your Guild Wars 2 account is linked to a Guild Wars account, this can be verified by logging in with your Guild Wars 2 account at https://account.guildwars2.com and clicking Link Accounts on the left-hand side of the page. If the account is already linked, you will see the message “Your Guild Wars accounts are linked!”

Changing an Account Name:

You do have the ability to change the Guild Wars 2 account name at this time. To
do so, follow these steps:

  1. Login using your Guild Wars 2 account information here: https://account.guildwars2.com/login
  2. Click the Edit Profile link
  3. Enter your new account name and login password and select Save Changes. You will then be able to log into Guild Wars with the new account name. Keep in mind, if you have linked Guild Wars 2 to an original Guild Wars account, you will also use this new account name to access both Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2.

Display Name Issues:

We may allow players to change their own Display Names in the future, but it’s not possible right now. We don’t have an ETA for this just yet, but we are working getting it working as soon as possible

If your display name is showing up as long string of numbers and letters on your account management page, there is a good chance you logged into account management using an account that only has a Guild Wars 1 account on it. This will show your display name as numbers as the display name is meant to be used with a Guild Wars 2 account. Since you haven’t set up a GW2 account and linked your GW1 account to it yet, you don’t actually have a GW2 display name set. Luckily this is really easy to resolve. Once you purchase Guild Wars 2 just follow the directions at http://support.guildwars2.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/8982 to register and link your GW1 account with a GW2 code. When you do that you will be given the chance to select a display name. After you complete the registration process your display name will update from that number to the name you select.

Account Registration:

If you need assistance with creating/registering a Guild Wars 2 account, please review the following Knowledge Base article: Guild Wars 2 Registration URL: http://support.guildwars2.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/8982

Collector’s Edition/Deluxe Digital Edition In Game Items:

If you have inadvertently deleted any of your CE or DE items, or deleted a character holding those items, please reply again to this message with as much information as possible to where the items were and how you lost them. We are currently working on a solution to this matter, but there may be a wait to ensure we get this resolved in a satisfactory way.

Hall of Monuments:

We have received a number of reports of various issues with HoM rewards which we are investigating. In the meantime please review this page: http://en.support.guildwars2.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/9029/kw/hall as many of your questions can be resolved there.

Guilds:

We are aware of an issue that is causing guilds to “disappear” from time to time. When this issue occurs, you are not able to see your guild. Your guildmates may or may not still see you as a member of it. Your guild is still there, and it will show up permanently once we’ve fixed this issue. You may also notice it come and go as you move to different parts of Tyria. We are working to get this issue resolved as soon as possible. In the meantime, you should be able to play normally aside from the invisible guild.

There are some reports that Guild invites cannot be sent at this time. Additionally, some players who were in guilds have been kicked and cannot be re-invited. We’re investigating.

There are some reports of various players’ being unable to see influence being added properly to their Guild. We are currently investigating this issue however we do have reports that it may only be a display issue, and will resolve its self after a few hours.

At this time it is currently not possible to change the name of a Guild once it has been created. If you would like another name you will need to create another guild.

Trading Post/Black Lion Trading Company:

We are aware of the issues preventing access for the trading post. We are working on getting these issues resolved as soon as possible.

We had some reports of players having difficulty buying Gems and items from the Black Lion Trading Post. This issue should now be resolved and transactions mailed to your character via in game mail. If you think you are still missing something though please inform us of what seems to be missing.

Character Creation:

Once a character is created we have no way to alter it. We may add this feature in the future but for now, you will need to create a new character if you wish to change some aspect of your character.

Once you select your Homeworld all your characters will be created on that same server. In order to have characters on another Homeworld you must transfer to that world.

When a character is deleted its name will be reserved for a limited time on the account it was deleted from. We are unable to get into specifics right now about how long the name is reserved. However please be aware there will be some delay in the naming become available for use. [Melana’s note: they’ve said elsewhere that it’s reserved for 24 hours…I don’t know if they’re changing that policy, or just that the support FAQ is keeping the option to change that open]

If you wish to review the naming policy for character creation you can do so at: https://www.guildwars2.com/en/legal/guild-wars-2-naming-policy/.

We had some reports of characters becoming stuck after creation or in the starting zone, this should now be resolved, but please let us know if you are still experiencing issues.

There were some reports of characters become stuck after transfers, this should now be resolved, please try logging into these characters again.
